Sustainability
The Brundtland Report of the 1987 World Commission on Environment and Development defines sustainability as, "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." At the Covert Cupboard, we have designed our business practices and products to intertwine the three pillars of sustainability: environment, community, and economy. When taking all of these into account, we can meet our mission statement and the moral obligation of providing a healthier lifestyle for current and future generations.
We achieve sustainability by using:
- 100% recyclable, biodegradable, non-petroleum based packaging
- Reusability discounts for customers who bring their own bags
- Affordable product pricing. After all, you work hard to earn your dough and we want to share ours with you
- Zero-carbon transportation footprint via human-powered bicycle delivery
- Local farmers and businesses to supply us with hearty, nutrient-rich ingredients
- Compost any waste that can be composted
- Organic ingredients and offering 99.9% organic products
- 100% wind power to operate our business through AmerenUE's Pure Power Program
- Dreamhost, for web hosting, who "purchase renewable energy certificates that offset the carbon emissions generated by all of [their] business activities."
We will continue seeking more sustainable ways of operating our business and encourage recommendations from you.
Kirksville's Guide for Sustainable Living
Brett helped organize a local guide for sustainable living. It can be read as a guide for anyone, but there's a lot of Kirksville, Missouri specific information. Also, it's meant to be read as a booklet (which you can pick up a copy on Truman's campus), so, if you're reading the online version, make sure to note the page numbers before you start reading. Read it here.
